Beware: Northville Township Police Warn of Bitcoin Scams Targeting Residents

Beware of Bitcoin Scams

Scam Alert

NORTHVILLE TOWNSHIP, Mich. – Authorities in Northville Township are alerting residents about an alarming increase in scams involving bitcoin.

Residents have reported receiving phone calls from individuals impersonating law enforcement, attempting to intimidate victims into making immediate payments. The callers claim that the victims are under investigation or have outstanding warrants, insisting that payment must be made right away. Typically, the requested payment is in the form of bitcoin or other cash transfers.

In one notable case, a scammer managed to extract nearly $300,000 in cash and bitcoin from a victim, who even handed over gold bricks.

Deputy Chief Matthew MacKenzie emphasized, “We want to remind our residents that law enforcement agencies do not request payments over the phone, especially in the form of bitcoin. If you receive a call or email claiming you are under investigation or have warrants, and the only way to resolve the issue is by making an immediate payment, it is undoubtedly a scam.”

Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel has issued multiple warnings and tips regarding similar phone scams. For more information on how to avoid and report scams, visit the Federal Trade Commission website.

Consumer complaints can be filed online on the Attorney General’s website.
