Greenville County Deputies Issue Warning About Bitcoin Scams
The Greenville County Sheriff's Office has recently issued a warning regarding a rising wave of Bitcoin scams targeting residents. Scammers are utilizing spoofed phone numbers and emails to impersonate law enforcement or government agencies, threatening victims with bogus arrest warrants.
How the Scam Operates
- Fake Credibility: Scammers instruct victims to visit a Bitcoin kiosk, misleadingly claiming it is owned by the Treasury Department.
- Deceptive Documentation: They send a fake Civil Process Manual to enhance their credibility.
- Wallet Requests: Victims are asked to transfer funds to a specific wallet address, falsely assuring them that this action will resolve their alleged warrant.
Once the funds are sent, they vanish, leaving victims with significant financial losses. Deputies emphasize, "This is 100% a scam. Law enforcement will never demand payment via Bitcoin or similar methods."
What to Do If You Receive a Suspicious Call or Text
- Hang up immediately.
- Do not provide personal information or make any payments.
- Report the incident to the Greenville County Sheriff’s Office at 864-467-5300.
