Bitcoin Dips Below $60K on Mt. Gox News, But Sell Pressure Might Be Less Than Expected

The cryptocurrency market is seeing a significant drop in prices, particularly bitcoin, which has fallen below $60,000 after news that the defunct crypto exchange Mt. Gox will begin returning over 140,000 BTC to clients whose assets were stolen in a 2014 hack. While many are concerned about the potential sell pressure from this massive amount of bitcoin hitting the market, some analysts believe it might not be as severe as anticipated.

Galaxy's Head of Research Alex Thorn suggests that the actual number of coins distributed could be significantly lower than the total amount, as 75% of creditors are expected to opt for the early payout in July, which translates to around 95,000 coins. He further believes that 65,000 of these coins will go to individual creditors, who might be more reluctant to sell than expected due to their long-term holding strategy and potential capital gains taxes.

Thorn also suggests that claims funds, which are expected to receive a significant portion of the distributed coins, are primarily comprised of high net worth bitcoiners seeking to build their holdings at a discounted price rather than arbitrage traders looking for quick profits. This suggests that the funds might be less likely to immediately sell their coins, further reducing the potential sell pressure on the market.
