Bitcoin Mining's New Frontier: HPC/AI and Investor Interest

The Bitcoin mining sector is experiencing a surge in investor interest thanks to Core Scientific's recent AI deal with CoreWeave. JPMorgan analysts highlight the potential of mining facilities to diversify into high-performance computing (HPC) and artificial intelligence (AI). Iris Energy emerges as a leader in this space due to its excess power capacity and early adoption of HPC. The bank notes that Iris Energy's track record of building efficient data centers and access to ample power positions it well to capitalize on the growing HPC/AI opportunity. Cipher Mining is also recognized for its attractive power costs and strong operational history, but has a smaller power pipeline compared to Iris Energy. While Riot Platforms remains fully committed to Bitcoin mining, Marathon Digital and CleanSpark are considered expensive based on power costs. This trend reflects a shift in investor perception, recognizing the valuable alternative use cases for mining facilities and the strategic importance of power access.
