Bitcoin's Surprising Shift: Decoupling from Trump as Harris Gains Momentum

A New Era for Bitcoin and Political Odds

For the first time since Kamala Harris’ nomination, Bitcoin's price has started to decouple from former President Donald Trump’s chances of winning the 2024 election on Polymarket.
Trump's odds had been dominating the crypto-native prediction market, reaching as high as 72% shortly after a high-profile assassination attempt. However, these odds began to decline following Joe Biden's exit from the race.
As Bitcoin soared to $70,000, it initially mirrored Trump's declining odds, leading many to believe there was a strong correlation between Bitcoin's price and Trump's political fortunes. Recently, Trump's odds fell to 49%, their lowest since May, while Harris surged to 50% for the first time since her campaign announcement.
At the same time, Bitcoin struggled to maintain the $54,500 support level, currently trading around $57,200. The chart below illustrates Bitcoin's price movement alongside Trump's Polymarket odds.

On the non-crypto prediction market PredictIt, Harris has established a 10-point lead over Trump, driven by successful rallies and her selection of Tim Walz as her VP pick. While both candidates remain ambiguous about Bitcoin, Walz is perceived to favor stricter regulations, aligning him with Senator Elizabeth Warren.
Mark Cuban has remarked that the VP's views on policy are often inconsequential, stating:
“What the VP thinks about policy will make for polite conversation on the campaign plane, but is totally meaningless.”
As Harris continues to lead in polls, it remains to be seen whether Bitcoin will revert to its previous correlation with Trump’s odds or continue to rise independently. Should Trump regain his lead on Polymarket, it could positively affect Bitcoin's price.
Additionally, new initiatives like the Crypto4Harris campaign and the Fairshake crypto super PAC's support for both parties signal a potential shift towards bipartisanship regarding crypto in the upcoming election.
