Bitfarms Stock Soars After Announcing Large-Scale Mining Site in Pennsylvania

Bitfarms, a Bitcoin mining company, has announced a major expansion plan that will significantly increase its power capacity and Bitcoin mining capabilities by 2025. The company has entered into an agreement to construct a 120 MW power plant in Sharon, Pennsylvania, which will become its first major mining site in the United States. This strategic location within the largest wholesale electricity market in the U.S. offers access to competitive electricity supply and allows for optimized energy costs. Bitfarms' shares (BITF) rose over 15% following the announcement. This expansion comes after Bitfarms rejected a takeover bid from Riot Platforms, which has been critical of the company's corporate governance practices. Despite a “poison pill” implemented by Bitfarms to deter takeovers, Riot Platforms acquired almost 6 million Bitfarms shares, raising their ownership to 13.1% and expressing their intent to push for change. Bitfarms' 2025 power capacity is expected to reach 648 MW, representing a 170% increase from its current capacity. With the new site's ability to support 8 EH/s and recent acquisitions, Bitfarms projects a 2025 hash rate exceeding 35 EH/s.
