Coinbase Loses Ground: Bybit Captures Second Spot in Global Crypto Exchange Ranking

Coinbase, once the second largest crypto exchange by trading volume, has slipped to third place as Bybit has surged to the number two spot. This shift is attributed to Bybit's aggressive strategy of lowering trading fees, which has attracted traders away from Coinbase. Kaiko, a blockchain analytics firm, notes that Bybit's growth has been fueled by both Bitcoin (BTC) and Ethereum (ETH) trading, with their market share on the platform increasing from 17% to 53% since last year. Meanwhile, Binance, despite retaining its top spot with 54% market share, has seen its share of Bitcoin and Ethereum trading volume decline from 59% to 43% in the past year. This decline could be related to the shifting risk appetite of traders and the tendency for altcoin trading volume to increase during bear markets. Interestingly, while Bybit has gained traction, Wall Street firms seem to be distancing themselves from the exchange. Hidden Road, a prime brokerage backed by Citadel Securities, recently stopped offering clients access to Bybit due to concerns over the exchange's KYC/AML procedures. Bybit has not yet responded publicly to these claims.
