Could Trump's Regulatory Clarity Propel Bitcoin to Mainstream Adoption? Insights from WisdomTree CEO

WisdomTree CEO Jonathan Steinberg believes that Bitcoin and cryptocurrency are on the verge of achieving mainstream adoption in the coming years. In a CNBC interview, he highlighted several key factors contributing to this shift: regulatory clarity, the rise of publicly traded crypto funds, and the tokenization of real-world assets (RWAs).
Regulatory Clarity
Steinberg pointed out the significance of former President Donald J. Trump’s recent speech at the Bitcoin 2024 conference, which he considers a pivotal moment for the industry. Trump’s commitment to regulatory clarity for crypto is expected to positively influence the asset class and blockchain-enabled finance. Steinberg stated:
“[Trump] could not have spoken in a more ambitious tone for what he would do with crypto and Bitcoin as an asset class.”
He emphasized Bitcoin’s historical performance, stating it has been the best-performing asset class for the past 15 years and will continue to excel, further driving adoption as it gains regulatory recognition.
Steinberg likened Bitcoin's evolution to that of money, predicting that digital assets will become the dominant form of transaction. He stated:
“In money, you had gold and then paper money — we’re moving toward programmable money, which will really transform financial services broadly.”
Tokenization of Real-World Assets
The discussion also touched on the expanding narrative around crypto, which now encompasses a wider array of tokenized RWAs. Steinberg noted that traditional financial institutions are entering this market, with examples like BlackRock’s BUIDL and Franklin Templeton’s FOBXX. Furthermore, Goldman Sachs is expected to launch new tokenization products for institutional clients this year.
According to McKinsey & Company, the RWA market is projected to reach $2 trillion by 2030, although it currently faces challenges such as limited liquidity and transaction volume.
This optimistic outlook from Steinberg underscores the potential for Bitcoin and crypto to become integral components of the financial landscape in the near future.
