Cryptocurrency Heist: Man Pleads Guilty to Stealing $1 Million in Meijer mPerks Points

A Grand Haven man has pleaded guilty to a cyber fraud scheme that cost Meijer an estimated $1 million. Nicholas Mui, 22, admitted to stealing mPerks credentials and selling them on the dark web for cryptocurrency.

Mui obtained leaked data from a breach unrelated to Meijer and cross-referenced it with mPerks accounts. He then sold the stolen mPerks logins on the dark web, enabling others to buy items using the stolen points.

In April and May 2023, many Meijer customers discovered their points had vanished, prompting an investigation. Meijer reinstated the lost points, but the corporate loss was estimated at over $1 million.

As part of his plea deal, Mui must forfeit $630,000 in frozen cryptocurrency and his computer tower.
