Democrats Prepare to Vote on Outdated Party Platform Amidst Kamala Harris' Candidacy
Delegates at the Democratic National Convention are gearing up for a pivotal vote on the 2024 party platform. This largely ceremonial vote, set for Monday evening in Chicago, will reflect the party's vision for the next four years, albeit based on a somewhat outdated document that still references President Joe Biden as the candidate for reelection.
The Democratic National Committee has stated that the over 90-page platform highlights the significant accomplishments of President Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris and outlines a progressive agenda for the nation. However, the platform fails to adequately reflect Harris' recent candidacy, as she has only provided a few specific policy positions since assuming the Democratic presidential ticket last month.
Despite the platform committee approving the document before Biden withdrew from the race and endorsed Harris, it continues to emphasize Biden’s second term and his administration's achievements while only mentioning Harris' contributions in passing.
The platform includes calls for:
- Restoring abortion rights nationwide
- Advancing green energy initiatives to create jobs and combat climate change
- Capping child care costs for low-income families
- Providing a pathway to U.S. citizenship for long-term undocumented residents
- Affirming Israel's right to defend itself while endorsing efforts for a lasting cease-fire in the ongoing conflict with Hamas.
While Harris has introduced new economic proposals, she has not released a detailed list of her policy positions since taking over the presidential ticket. Additionally, her campaign has indicated a shift away from some of the more liberal stances she held during her initial presidential run in 2020.
It's also important to note that candidates are not obligated to follow their party's platform, often leading to discrepancies between party ideals and candidate policies.
