Dogecoin Dump Liquidates $60 Million in Long Bets

Dogecoin (DOGE) experienced a significant price drop of over 10%, leading to the liquidation of $60 million in long bets. This downturn occurred during a broader sell-off in major cryptocurrencies, including Bitcoin (BTC) and Ethereum. $47 million in Bitcoin long bets and $76 million in Ethereum long bets were also liquidated. The overall cryptocurrency market saw over $440 million in long positions liquidated due to profit-taking and a stronger dollar. Lucy Hu, a senior analyst at Metalpha, stated that the meme coin market has experienced a general pullback this month due to pressure on Bitcoin prices. Coinanlyze data revealed that nearly all DOGE liquidation activity in the past 24 hours stemmed from longs, with only about $600,000 worth of shorts liquidated. This represents the highest level of DOGE futures liquidations since May 2021. The majority of the liquidations occurred on Huobi, a crypto exchange popular in Asia. Open interest for DOGE futures dropped by 16% to $600 million, and a long-short ratio indicating bearish sentiment with a reading of 0.94. This suggests traders are expecting further declines. Liquidation occurs when an exchange closes a trader's leveraged position due to insufficient funds to maintain the trade, leading to potential losses for the trader.
