Ethereum's Struggle: Will 2025 Bring a Turnaround as Investors Flock to Solana and Bitcoin?

Ethereum Struggles

Investor Interest in ETH Declines
Ethereum (ETH) has faced significant challenges this cycle, with low investor interest compared to Bitcoin (BTC) and Solana (SOL). According to Zaheer Ebtikar from crypto hedge fund Split Capital, ETH is suffering from a case of ‘middle child syndrome’ where it is overshadowed by competitors.

“$ETH very much struggles with middle-child syndrome. The asset is not in vogue with institutional investors, the asset lost favor in crypto private capital circles, and retail is nowhere to be seen bidding anything at this size.”

Investors Abandon ETH

In the current year, ETH has only returned 8% year-to-date, while BTC and SOL have seen double-digit gains. Ebtikar attributes this underperformance to investors shifting focus toward BTC and other rivals such as SOL and Sui (SUI).

He highlights that the crypto landscape consists of three capital sources: institutional (ETFs/futures), private capital (liquid funds, VCs), and retail. Currently, only the first two sources are significant. Institutional investors are particularly drawn to BTC, leading to net negative flows of $546 million for ETH ETFs since their launch in July, indicating a lack of interest.

Meanwhile, private capital views ETH as overvalued, redirecting investments to perceived undervalued assets like SOL, Celestia (TIA), and SUI.

“$ETH is too large for native capital to support while simultaneously being able to support other index assets like $SOL and other large caps like $TIA, $TAO, and $SUI.”

Analysts at Coinbase have echoed these sentiments in their September report. The SOLETH ratio, which measures SOL's value against ETH, has surged, suggesting a significant rotation of investors from ETH to SOL.

Despite these challenges, Ebtikar remains optimistic about ETH's future. He notes that ETH is the only altcoin with an approved ETF in the U.S. and predicts renewed interest from institutional investors starting in 2025, driven by increased demand from ETF buyers and potential changes within the Ethereum Foundation.

At the time of writing, ETH is valued at $2,400, having consolidated between $2,300 and $2,500 since early October.
