Franklin Templeton's Bold Move: New Crypto ETF to Track Bitcoin and Ethereum!

Franklin Templeton has officially filed an S-1 application with the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) to launch a groundbreaking crypto index exchange-traded fund (ETF). The proposed fund, named “Franklin Crypto Index ETF,” is designed to provide investors with exposure to the performance of Bitcoin (BTC) and Ethereum (ETH) through a regulated financial product.

Key Details of the ETF

The ETF will track the CF Institutional Digital Asset Index, which currently only includes BTC and ETH, but may expand to include additional cryptocurrencies as regulatory conditions and market dynamics evolve.

To ensure the security of its digital assets, Coinbase Custody Trust Company will act as the custodian, while Bank of New York Mellon will oversee cash management and administrative tasks. If the ETF receives approval, it will be traded on the Cboe BZX Exchange under the ticker symbol “EZPZ.” The Cboe is also pursuing regulatory approval to facilitate in-kind creation and redemption of ETF shares using digital assets.

Rising Demand and Competition

This application comes at a time of increasing demand for diversified investment products and intensified competition among asset managers to launch crypto ETFs. Notably, in June, Hashdex filed for its own ETF targeting Bitcoin and Ethereum, with a decision from the SEC expected by September 30. Other firms, including Grayscale and VanEck, are also preparing to launch similar products.

The surge in interest for crypto ETFs highlights a broader trend of institutional engagement with digital assets. Despite market volatility, there is a growing acknowledgment of the potential role these assets can play in diversified investment portfolios. Franklin Templeton's latest ETF proposal aligns with its strategy to enhance its offerings in the digital asset realm, building on its earlier spot ETFs for Bitcoin and Ethereum launched earlier this year.
