How Trump's Appeal to 'Traditional' Masculinity is Shaping the Crypto Landscape Among Men

The Intersection of Crypto, Gender, and Politics
The gender divide in U.S. politics, especially during this year's presidential election, has been well documented. However, a new crypto divide is emerging that intersects with gender dynamics, as highlighted by pollster Dan Cassino from Fairleigh Dickinson University.
Crypto Ownership and Political Preferences
According to the FDU Poll, one in seven voters owns cryptocurrency, with a notable tilt toward Donald Trump, who has positioned himself as a strong crypto advocate. Among crypto owners, 50% support Trump compared to 38% for Kamala Harris, while non-crypto owners favor Harris 53% over Trump 41%. Notably, men are more than twice as likely as women to own crypto.
The 'Masculinity Trap'
Cassino explains that for many men, crypto represents a means to fulfill societal expectations—such as making money and being financially savvy. He notes that while men who identify as “completely masculine” are less likely to own crypto, those who subscribe to traditional masculinity ideals are increasingly drawn to it.
Demographics of Crypto Owning Men
Around 25% of men fall into this category, skewing younger and including a significant number of Black and Latino individuals. Among this group, 37% own crypto, compared to just 18% among their counterparts. These crypto owners overwhelmingly favor Trump, as they search for ways to meet the unrealistic demands of traditional masculinity.
Trump’s Role in This Dynamic
Cassino posits that Trump's narrative—fueled by hostility toward immigration and various policies—offers these men a sense of belonging and validation, even if the proposed solutions are unlikely to yield results. Trump’s embrace of crypto is a shift from his previous dismissal of Bitcoin as a ‘scam’. Recently, he purchased a burger with Bitcoin and launched a new crypto endeavor called World Liberty Financial.
At the Bitcoin 2024 conference, Trump vowed to dominate the crypto space, promising to end the anti-crypto crusade initiated by the Biden administration.
The Broader Implications
This dynamic raises crucial questions about the expectations of masculinity in relation to evolving economic and social realities. As long as these disparities persist, men may continue to chase the false hope of prosperity through crypto investments, driven by societal pressures and political narratives.
