Massive Outflows Hit US Spot Bitcoin ETFs: Grayscale's GBTC Leads the Decline

On Monday, the landscape for spot bitcoin exchange-traded funds (ETFs) took a notable downturn, with total outflows reaching $168.44 million. This decline starkly contrasts with the performance of their Ethereum counterparts. The primary culprits behind this significant drop were three funds, notably Grayscale’s GBTC, which led the pack in outflows.

3 Leading Bitcoin ETFs Experience Major Outflows

Grayscale’s Bitcoin Trust (GBTC) recorded a staggering $69.12 million outflow, pushing its total net divestments since January 11, 2024, to $19.13 billion. GBTC wasn't alone in facing these losses; Ark Invest’s ARKB shed $69 million, while Fidelity’s FBTC saw a decrease of $58.04 million, as reported by sosovalue.xyz and coinglass.com metrics.

Despite these setbacks, three other funds managed to post gains. Grayscale’s Mini Bitcoin Trust, also known as BTC, increased by $21.81 million. Additionally, Vaneck’s HODL added $3 million, and Bitwise’s BITB absorbed $2.9 million.

In contrast, Blackrock’s IBIT, along with BRRR, BTCO, EZBC, BTCW, and DEFI, remained stable with no changes. Collectively, these twelve funds have amassed $17.34 billion in cumulative net inflows since their inception in January.

The recently launched BTC or Mini Bitcoin Trust has rapidly gained traction, amassing $240.81 million in positive inflows since its launch. IBIT leads all funds with cumulative inflows of $20.10 billion to date. Conversely, the Hashdex DEFI spot BTC ETF has recorded the smallest inflows, totaling just $2.1 million so far.

Monday's trading activity was robust, with a total volume of $5.24 billion. As of August 6, 2024, these twelve spot BTC ETFs collectively hold $48.43 billion in BTC reserves, which represents approximately 4.51% of bitcoin’s total market capitalization.
