Senator Lummis Proposes Bold Bill for U.S. to Secure 1 Million Bitcoin: A Game Changer for the Dollar

Senator Lummis Introduces Groundbreaking Legislation
Senator Cynthia Lummis has unveiled a bold proposal directing the U.S. government to acquire 1 million Bitcoin, valued at over $68 billion. Speaking at the Bitcoin 2024 conference in Nashville, Lummis emphasized that this initiative aims to stabilize the dollar and combat inflation by purchasing Bitcoin as a strategic reserve asset.
Details of the Bill
The proposed legislation would instruct the U.S. Treasury to gradually buy Bitcoin over a five-year period. Drawing a parallel to the government's strategic petroleum reserve, Lummis believes that Bitcoin could be a game changer for addressing the nation’s debt crisis.
“We know from modeling the numbers and past experience with Bitcoin that it is capable of being an absolute game changer for the mess the United States has gotten itself into with its debt and its deficits,” stated Lummis.
Security and Usage of Bitcoin
The senator detailed that the government would self-custody the Bitcoin in various locations. These assets would be earmarked solely for reducing the national debt and must be held for a minimum of 20 years.
Political Context and Support
Lummis has emerged as a prominent advocate for Bitcoin in Congress, asserting that this acquisition would help stabilize the dollar and tackle inflation, especially as the national debt has recently surpassed $35 trillion. Her proposal follows Donald Trump's endorsement of a U.S. Bitcoin reserve at the same conference, where he expressed commitment to never sell the government's existing 210,000 Bitcoin holdings.
Additionally, Robert F. Kennedy Jr., an independent presidential candidate, has called for the purchase of 500 bitcoins daily until reaching a 4 million Bitcoin reserve.
Future Outlook
While Lummis acknowledges that her legislation may face challenges in passing before the 2024 elections, she is optimistic about the increasing political interest in Bitcoin reserves. This proposal represents one of the most aggressive government adoptions of Bitcoin to date, potentially legitimizing it as an important economic asset. Lummis remains hopeful that other Bitcoin-centric bills could still gain traction this year as the cryptocurrency approaches the political mainstream.
