Shocking Bribery in Russia: Investigator Sentenced to 16 Years for $65 Million Bitcoin Scandal

Russia has sentenced Marat Tambiyev, a former mid-ranking investigator, to 16 years in jail after he was caught accepting a bribe of 1,032 bitcoins, valued at around $65 million, from hackers while investigating their illegal activities.

Russia’s Bribery Scandal

Tambiyev, who had been with the Investigative Committee of Russia (ICR) since 2011, took on key responsibilities across various investigative departments. He was the head of the investigative division in Moscow’s Tverskoy district before his downfall. The bribe was allegedly accepted on April 7, 2022, from members of the Infraud Organization, a notorious hacking group.

A lawsuit filed in the Nikulinsky District Court of Moscow revealed that Tambiyev accepted the bribe under the condition that the group’s illegal assets would not be confiscated, allowing two members to avoid prison. When the bribe was uncovered in early 2023, its value exceeded 1.6 billion rubles, setting a new bribery record in Russia.

In Tambiyev’s apartment, investigators found a MacBook Pro containing a folder labeled “Pension” that held keys to wallets with the 1,032 bitcoins, which were seized and transferred to a Ledger Nano X hardware wallet.

Despite his conviction, Tambiyev maintains his innocence, claiming he was set up and that his actions aided the state in recovering funds linked to criminal activities. A subordinate, Kristina Lyakhovenko, was also sentenced to nine years in prison, with both planning to appeal.

Mass Arrests in Russia

Russia has recently been cracking down on cybercrime. Nearly 100 suspected cybercriminals linked to the UAPS payment system and cryptocurrency exchange Cryptex were arrested. These individuals were involved in activities like money laundering and the sale of stolen bank cards. The US Treasury Department reported that Cryptex processed over $51 million from ransomware attacks and $720 million in transactions related to services used by Russian cybercriminals.
