Shocking Kidnapping: Cryptocurrency Millionaire David Balland Severely Injured for Ransom

A Terrifying Ordeal
A wealthy founder of a French cryptocurrency firm, David Balland, is currently recovering in hospital after a harrowing kidnapping incident where his finger was severed by his captors, who demanded a staggering €10 million ransom.
The Kidnapping
David Balland, 36, co-founder of Ledger, a company specializing in digital wallets for cryptocurrency, was taken from his home by an armed gang. The incident occurred near Ledger’s headquarters in Vierzon, central France. His partner, Amandine, was also kidnapped and later found bound and gagged in the back of a van in Paris.

The Investigation
After a media blackout was ordered, police initiated a large-scale operation involving 230 officers. The gang, consisting of nine men and one woman, has been apprehended, but the leaders remain at large. The ransom demand included a horrifying video of Balland's severed finger sent to his business partner, Éric Larchevêque, a well-known media personality in France.
Laure Beccuau, the Paris prosecutor, revealed that part of the ransom was paid in cryptocurrency, but much of it was subsequently frozen by authorities.

The Aftermath
Balland was freed in a police operation without any force being necessary, while Amandine was liberated later in a car park near Étampes. Though Balland is receiving treatment for a mutilated hand, Amandine is recovering from trauma but is physically unharmed.
A Rising Concern
This incident adds to a worrying trend of attacks on French tech millionaires, raising fears among those in the cryptocurrency space. Alexandre Stachtchenko, a bitcoin specialist, emphasized the need for individuals who have amassed wealth through cryptocurrency to remain discreet and cautious about sharing information regarding their assets.
