A Danbury, Connecticut teen is believed to be involved in one of the largest cryptocurrency heists in U.S. history, with a staggering $243 million (approximately 4,100 Bitcoin) reported stolen by the FBI. This incident traces back to an August incident where a couple was carjacked and taken hostage while house hunting.
The Hostage Situation
On August 25, Danbury police apprehended six suspects from Florida accused of assaulting and kidnapping the victims. The couple was violently removed from their $250,000 Lamborghini Urus, beaten, and bound in a van. Initially, the motive was unclear, but investigators later revealed that they were likely targeted for a ransom in cryptocurrency related to their son.
The Alleged Involvement of the Teen
The son, whose name remains undisclosed due to lack of charges, is believed to have connections to a crypto crime chat community. He allegedly operates under various aliases like βSwagβ and βWizβ in online forums. The group is said to have deceived a victim in Washington D.C. out of nearly a quarter of a billion dollars.
The Investigation
Detective Sgt. Steven Castrovinci from the Danbury Police Department stated that the investigation has expanded significantly, revealing a network of co-conspirators across the country. They utilized VPNs to hide their digital footprints and reportedly spent the stolen funds on luxury items and international travel.
