Traders Brace for Inflation Data and Major Bank Earnings: What to Expect Next

Market Overview
Stock futures showed little movement on Thursday evening as investors prepared for key economic indicators. Futures tied to the S&P 500 rose by 0.1%, while Nasdaq 100 futures also ticked up by 0.1%, and the Dow Jones Industrial Average added 43 points. This slight uptick comes after a day of losses in major averages, with the S&P 500 and Dow both pulling back from record highs.

Inflation Concerns
New data released on Thursday heightened concerns over persistent inflation, with the consumer price index for September rising 0.2% month-over-month and 2.4% year-over-year, surpassing expectations.
The likelihood of the Federal Reserve reducing interest rates by a quarter point in November sits at approximately 87%, according to the CME FedWatch Tool. However, the Fed is expected to remain cautious, closely monitoring upcoming data that could influence their decision-making.
Preston Caldwell, a senior economist at Morningstar, stated, "The data isn’t compelling enough to deter the Fed from cutting entirely in November."
Upcoming Reports
Friday will bring another critical data release: the producer price index (PPI). Analysts anticipate a 0.1% increase in September, with an expected 0.2% rise excluding food and energy costs.
Additionally, JPMorgan Chase and Wells Fargo are set to report their quarterly earnings, which could significantly impact market sentiment going into the weekend.
Current Market Performance
As the week progresses, the S&P 500 has gained 0.5% week-to-date, while the Dow is up 0.2% and the Nasdaq leads with a 0.8% increase. Investors remain on alert as they navigate through these economic indicators and bank earnings.
