Unlock Tax Benefits by Donating Crypto to Charity: What You Need to Know

Gifting Crypto to Charity: A Smart Move for Tax Breaks
If you're considering a charitable gift this holiday season, donating cryptocurrency could provide you with a valuable tax break. However, there are important factors to consider before making the transfer, as highlighted by experts.
Surge in Crypto Donations
In 2024, there has been a notable increase in crypto gifts to charity, with Fidelity Charitable reporting $688 million in donations, primarily in Bitcoin, as of November 19. This is a dramatic rise compared to $49 million in all of 2023.
Benefits of Donating Crypto
Donating crypto is similar to giving other types of property, but it comes with unique advantages. According to Juan Ros, a certified financial planner, donating profitable investments like cryptocurrency is generally more beneficial than cash. This approach allows donors to avoid capital gains taxes and claim a deduction based on the asset's fair market value, provided it has been held for over a year. Notably, the tax break is capped at 30% of your adjusted gross income for public charities.
The Appeal for Investors
For many crypto investors, cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin are often the most highly appreciated assets in their portfolios. With Bitcoin's price reaching around $96,000, up nearly 120% year-to-date, this strategy becomes increasingly attractive.
Challenges in Donating Crypto
Despite the benefits, donating cryptocurrency can be more complex than donating stocks. Not all charities accept crypto donations; as of January, 56% of the largest U.S. charities were open to crypto gifts, up from 49% the previous year. Most donor-advised funds are well-equipped to handle digital currency donations, allowing donors to receive an upfront deduction while deciding when to distribute funds to nonprofits.
Documentation Requirements
When donating a profitable investment held for over a year, the deduction is based on the fair market value of the asset. The IRS requires additional documentation for digital assets valued over $5,000. Donors must provide a qualified appraisal to support their deduction, which includes filing Form 8283 with their tax return. Failing to meet IRS criteria could jeopardize the charitable deduction in case of an audit.
By understanding these factors, you can maximize your charitable impact while enjoying potential tax benefits from your crypto donations.
