Michigan Man Pleads Guilty in Massive Meijer mPerks Cyber Theft
A 22-year-old Michigan man has pleaded guilty to a massive cyber theft scheme that cost Meijer more than $1 million. Nicholas Mui of Grand Haven admitted to conducting a criminal enterprise involving the theft and sale of information associated with the retailer's mPerks loyalty program.
Mui's scheme involved obtaining login credentials from a separate data breach and using them to access the mPerks infrastructure. He then sold these credentials on the internet, allowing others to steal mPerks points and make purchases from Meijer.
The theft was discovered in April and May 2023 when customers reported missing mPerks points. Meijer has since restored the stolen points to affected customers, estimating the total loss to be over $1 million.
Mui is scheduled to be sentenced on Sept. 5, and will forfeit $630,000 in cryptocurrency and cash, as well as his computer tower.
